If your uncle, your brother, or your buddy is a Realtor, should you use them? It’s a tougher question for some people than others, depending on how close you are. It can also be a tough one for Realtors. I sometimes come across agents that are just livid with a friend who didn’t use them. I usually don’t want to deal with people that don’t want to deal with me, but will admit, it did hurt once or twice. It can be taken as an attack on your character or ability.
The short answer to dealing with friends is this: It shouldn’t make a difference.
You want to deal with, when buying or selling, the person you think will do the best job for you. It’s too important a job to give to someone close if it is just to do them a favour.
You may have a friend or relative that is experienced and knowledgeable and you think will do a great job for you. If you trust them, even believe that they may do a better job than they normally would because of your relationship, you should use them! The last thing that they will want is to have you speaking ill of them around your shared family or friends.
On the other hand, if your uncle or friend is not knowledgeable, experienced and trustworthy, don’t use them! If he or she is someone you don’t feel comfortable doing business with because they don’t have a reputation for looking out for other people, back away, and find someone that will represent your interests. You are buying an expensive asset. Mistakes happen. Expensive ones. Your Realtor should be advising you, and helping you prevent them.
